Do You Need Different Swab Sizes for Different Sensors?

Sensor swab width is matched to sensor format, not camera brand. Here is how 1.0x, 1.3x and 1.6x Vswabs map to full frame, Micro Four Thirds and APS-C sensors.
Quick answer
Yes, swab width should match your sensor format. Full-frame sensors take 1.0x swabs, APS-C takes 1.6x swabs, and Micro Four Thirds takes 1.3x swabs. Using a swab that is too wide can drag liquid and dust into the chamber edges; too narrow means extra passes and more risk of streaks. Match the swab to the format, not the brand.
Why swab width is matched to sensor format
A sensor cleaning swab is sized so its fabric edge reaches the full width of the sensor in one controlled stroke. If the swab is narrower than the sensor, you need overlapping passes, which increases the chance of leaving a drying line or redistributing dust. If it is wider, the fabric can catch on the chamber walls and deposit liquid outside the sensor area. That is why the VisibleDust range uses distinct widths: 1.0x for full frame, 1.3x for Micro Four Thirds, and 1.6x for APS-C.
1.0x vs 1.6x: what the numbers actually mean
The number is a relative width reference, not a measurement in inches or millimetres. A 1.0x Vswab is the widest in the standard range and suits full-frame sensors. A 1.6x Vswab is narrower and suits APS-C sensors. The 1.3x size sits between them for Micro Four Thirds. Because the numbering is relative, you cannot convert it to a sensor dimension; you match it by format name instead.
What about medium format sensors?
Medium format sensors are larger than full frame, so a standard 1.0x swab will not cover the full width in one pass. VisibleDust does not list a medium format swab in the product records supplied here, so the honest answer is that the standard range is not sized for that format. If you shoot medium format, check the manufacturer's current accessory list rather than forcing a full-frame swab to do a job it was not sized for.
Do swab sizes vary by camera brand?
No. Swab size follows the sensor format, and the same format appears across brands. A full-frame sensor from one manufacturer uses the same 1.0x swab width as a full-frame sensor from another. The camera body shape, mirrorless or DSLR, does not change the swab width you need. What changes between cameras is chamber depth and access angle, which is why the V shape of the swab is designed for maneuverability inside the chamber.
Sensor swab size questions, answered
- Can I use a 1.0x swab on an APS-C sensor?
- You can, but the swab is wider than the sensor. The extra fabric can catch on the chamber edges and push liquid or dust into corners you cannot easily reach. Use 1.6x for APS-C.
- Can I use a 1.6x swab on a full-frame sensor?
- It will not cover the full width in one stroke, so you will need overlapping passes. Overlapping passes raise the risk of streaks and uneven drying. Use 1.0x for full frame.
- Is there a swab for medium format?
- The standard VisibleDust widths listed here cover full frame, APS-C and Micro Four Thirds. Medium format is larger than full frame, so it falls outside this range. Check the manufacturer's current accessory list for medium format.
- Do I need a different swab for mirrorless vs DSLR?
- No. Swab width is set by sensor format, not by the camera type. A full-frame mirrorless and a full-frame DSLR both take a 1.0x swab. Match the format, not the body style.
Sizes in the VisibleDust range
- VisibleDust DHAP Orange 1.3x Vswabs (12 Pack) with bonus CurVswab and Corner Swabs: VisibleDust DHAP Orange 1.3x Vswabs are sized for Micro Four Thirds sensors, with patented mini-channels and a contoured V shape for even saturation and maneuverability inside the camera chamber. If you shoot Micro Four Thirds, the 1.3x width covers the sensor in one pass without dragging fabric on the chamber walls.
- VisibleDust EZ Sensor Cleaning Kit THINLITE-X Light Cleaning Orange DHAP 1.0x Vswabs: The EZ Sensor Cleaning Kit THINLITE-X Light Cleaning Orange DHAP 1.0x Vswabs are sized for full-frame sensors and use the same mini-channel and V-shape design. A 1.0x swab is the correct width for full frame; using it on APS-C would be too wide.
- VisibleDust EZ Sensor Cleaning Kit PLUS with VDust Plus, 5 x Green 1.6x Vswabs and Sensor Brush: The EZ Sensor Cleaning Kit PLUS includes 5 x Green 1.6x Vswabs, the width for APS-C sensors, along with VDust Plus liquid and a sensor brush. APS-C shooters get the narrower 1.6x width plus a complete kit, so the swab matches the sensor format out of the box.
